Twelve Data

Twelve Data provides real-time and historical financial market data for stocks, forex, cryptocurrencies, and ETFs, along with a large library of technical indicators. Access to the API is authenticated with an API key issued from your Twelve Data account.

Features

Type: API

SourceDestination

  • Seamless API Integration: Connect to any endpoint as source or destination without coding, with automatic data product creation
  • Visual Composition & Chaining: Build complex integrations using visual templates, chain API calls, and compose workflows with data validation and filtering
  • API Proxy: Expose curated slices of your data securely with a secure and customizable API proxy that validates and transforms data on the fly
  • Request optimization with intelligent batching, retry, and caching to minimize API calls and costs

Prerequisites

Before creating a Twelve Data credential, you need an API key from your Twelve Data account. Twelve Data authenticates every request with this key, which can be sent either as an apikey query parameter or in the HTTP Authorization header.

To obtain your Twelve Data API key, follow these steps:

  1. Sign up for a Twelve Data account at twelvedata.com/register, or sign in if you already have an account.

  2. After signing in, open your account dashboard and navigate to the API Keys page.

  3. Copy the API key shown for your account. This key authenticates all requests to the Twelve Data API and should be kept confidential.

If your API key is compromised, you can regenerate it from the same API Keys page in your Twelve Data dashboard. For detailed information about authentication, available endpoints, rate limits, and response formats, see the Twelve Data API Documentation.

Authenticate

Credentials required

An authentication method that requires sending a unique secret token with each API request

FieldRequiredSecretDescription
API Key ValueYesYesAn encoded string value used as a secret token to authenticate API requests

Create a credential in Nexla

  1. After selecting the data source type, click the Add Credential tile to open the Add New Credential overlay.

  2. Enter a name for the credential in the Credential Name field and a short, meaningful description in the Credential Description field.

  3. Enter your Twelve Data API key in the API Key Value field. This value is sent with each API request to authenticate your connection to the Twelve Data API and must be kept confidential.

If your API key is compromised, regenerate it from the API Keys page in your Twelve Data dashboard and update this credential with the new value.

For detailed information about authentication, available endpoints, and response formats, see the Twelve Data API Documentation.

  4. Click the Save button at the bottom of the overlay. The newly added credential will now appear in a tile on the Authenticate screen during data source creation.

Use as a data source

To create a new data flow, navigate to the Integrate section, and click the New Data Flow button. Select the Twelve Data connector tile, then select the credential that will be used to connect to Twelve Data, and click Next; or, create a new Twelve Data credential for use in this flow.

Endpoint templates

Nexla provides pre-built templates that can be used to rapidly configure data sources to ingest data from common Twelve Data endpoints. Select the endpoint from which this source will fetch data from the Endpoint pulldown menu. Available endpoint templates are listed in the expandable boxes below.

Accumulation/distribution

This endpoint template retrieves the Accumulation/Distribution (AD) technical indicator time series from Twelve Data. Use this template when you need volume-based indicator data for a symbol to support market analysis, reporting, or integration into downstream Nexla flows.

  • Configure the request parameters required by Twelve Data, such as the instrument symbol and interval, before testing the endpoint.

For detailed information about the Accumulation/Distribution indicator, its request parameters, and response structure, see the Twelve Data API Documentation.

Addition

This endpoint template retrieves the Addition (ADD) technical indicator time series from Twelve Data, which adds two specified data series for a symbol. Use this template when you need the computed additive series for market analysis, reporting, or integration into downstream Nexla flows.

  • Configure the request parameters required by Twelve Data, such as the instrument symbol and interval, before testing the endpoint.

For detailed information about the Addition indicator, its request parameters, and response structure, see the Twelve Data API Documentation.

Once the selected endpoint template has been configured, click the Test button to the right of the endpoint selection menu to retrieve a sample of the data that will be fetched. Sample data will be displayed in the Endpoint Test Result panel on the right, allowing you to verify that the source is configured correctly before saving.

Manual configuration

Twelve Data data sources can also be manually configured to ingest data from any valid Twelve Data API endpoint, including endpoints not covered by the pre-built templates, chained API calls, or custom request parameters. Select the Advanced tab at the top of the configuration screen, and follow the instructions in Connect to Any API to configure the API method, endpoint URL, date/time and lookup macros, path to data, metadata, and request headers.

Once all of the relevant settings have been configured, click the Create button in the upper right corner of the screen to save and create the new Twelve Data data source. Nexla will now begin ingesting data from the configured endpoint and will organize any data that it finds into one or more Nexsets.
