Thinkific

Thinkific is an online course platform that lets creators and businesses build, market, and sell courses, communities, and digital products. Its Admin REST API exposes account data such as users, courses, enrollments, orders, and promotions, and supports creating and updating records. Nexla connects to the Thinkific Admin API to move this data in and out of your other systems.

Prerequisites

Before creating a Thinkific credential, you need your Thinkific API Key and your account Subdomain. Thinkific authenticates every Admin API request by sending both values as request headers: X-Auth-API-Key and X-Auth-Subdomain. API access requires a Grow/Pro plus Growth plan or higher.

To obtain your Thinkific credentials, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your Thinkific admin account.

  2. Navigate to Settings and open the Code & analytics tab.

  3. Locate the API section, then click Reset key to generate an API key.

  4. Copy the key immediately and store it securely. Thinkific displays the key only once, so record it before leaving the page.

  5. Note your account Subdomain. This is the first segment of your Thinkific URL. For example, if you access Thinkific at example.thinkific.com, your subdomain is example.

Keep the API key confidential. If it is compromised, reset it from the same Code & analytics screen to invalidate the old key. For details, see the Thinkific API Key Authorization documentation and the Thinkific Admin API Reference.

Authenticate

Credentials required

Authenticate to Thinkific using your API key and store subdomain. Both are sent as request headers (X-Auth-API-Key and X-Auth-Subdomain).

FieldRequiredSecretDescription
API KeyYesYesYour Thinkific API key for authentication.
SubdomainYesNoThe subdomain of your Thinkific URL (e.g., if your URL is example.thinkific.com, your subdomain is "example").

Create a credential in Nexla

  1. After selecting the data source/destination type, click the Add Credential tile to open the Add New Credential overlay.

  2. Enter a name for the credential in the Credential Name field and a short, meaningful description in the Credential Description field.

  3. Enter your Thinkific API key in the API Key field. This value is sent in the X-Auth-API-Key request header and must be kept confidential.

  4. Enter your account subdomain in the Subdomain field. This is the first segment of your Thinkific URL, and it is sent in the X-Auth-Subdomain request header.

If your API key is compromised, reset it from Settings > Code & analytics > API in your Thinkific account to invalidate the old key and generate a new one.

For detailed information about API authentication and available endpoints, see the Thinkific Admin API Reference.

  5. Click the Save button at the bottom of the overlay. The newly added credential will now appear in a tile on the Authenticate screen during data source/destination creation.

Use as a data source

To create a new data flow, navigate to the Integrate section, and click the New Data Flow button. Select the Thinkific connector tile, then select the credential that will be used to connect to the Thinkific account, and click Next; or, create a new Thinkific credential for use in this flow.

Endpoint templates

Nexla provides pre-built templates that can be used to rapidly configure data sources to ingest data from common Thinkific endpoints. Select the endpoint from which this source will fetch data from the Endpoint pulldown menu. Available endpoint templates are listed in the expandable boxes below.

Sample data will be displayed in the Endpoint Test Result panel on the right, allowing you to verify that the source is configured correctly before saving.

Manual configuration

Thinkific data sources can also be manually configured to ingest data from any valid Thinkific Admin API endpoint, including endpoints not covered by the pre-built templates, chained API calls, or custom request parameters. Select the Advanced tab at the top of the configuration screen, and follow the instructions in Connect to Any API to configure the API method, endpoint URL, date/time and lookup macros, path to data, metadata, and request headers.

Once all of the relevant settings have been configured, click the Create button in the upper right corner of the screen to save and create the new Thinkific data source. Nexla will now begin ingesting data from the configured endpoint and will organize any data that it finds into one or more Nexsets.

Use as a destination

Click the + icon on the Nexset that will be sent to the Thinkific destination, and select the Send to Destination option from the menu. Select the Thinkific connector from the list of available destination connectors, then select the credential that will be used to connect to the Thinkific account, and click Next; or, create a new Thinkific credential for use in this flow.

Endpoint templates

Nexla provides pre-built templates that can be used to rapidly configure destinations to send data to common Thinkific endpoints. Select the endpoint to which data will be sent from the Endpoint pulldown menu. Then, click on the template in the list below to expand it, and follow the instructions to configure additional endpoint settings.

[Rest API] Create User

Create a new user in Thinkific. Each record from your Nexset is sent as a separate request to create a user with the supplied fields.

The request body must match the format expected by the Thinkific Admin API. For details about required and optional fields, see the Thinkific Admin API Reference.

[Rest API] Update User

Update an existing user by ID in Thinkific. Each record from your Nexset is sent as a separate request to update the matching user with the supplied fields.

Each record must include the ID of the user to update along with the fields to change. For details about the request body format, see the Thinkific Admin API Reference.

[Rest API] Create Enrollment

Enroll a user in a course. Each record from your Nexset is sent as a separate request to create an enrollment linking a user to a course.

The request body must reference a valid user and course. For details about required fields, see the Thinkific Admin API Reference.

[Rest API] Create Coupon

Create a new coupon for a course or bundle. Each record from your Nexset is sent as a separate request to create a coupon with the supplied fields.

The request body must match the format expected by the Thinkific Admin API. For details about required and optional fields, see the Thinkific Admin API Reference.

[Rest API] Create Promotion

Create a new promotion in Thinkific. Each record from your Nexset is sent as a separate request to create a promotion with the supplied fields.

The request body must match the format expected by the Thinkific Admin API. For details about required and optional fields, see the Thinkific Admin API Reference.

Manual configuration

Thinkific destinations can also be manually configured to send data to any valid Thinkific Admin API endpoint. Select the Advanced tab at the top of the configuration screen, and follow the instructions in Connect to Any API to configure the API method, data format, endpoint URL, request headers, attribute exclusions, record batching, and response webhooks.

Thinkific APIs typically expect JSON format for most operations. For update operations, include the ID of the object to be updated as required by the endpoint.

Save & activate

Once all endpoint settings have been configured, click the Done button in the upper right corner of the screen to save and create the destination. To send the data to the configured Thinkific endpoint, open the destination resource menu, and select Activate.

The Nexset data will not be sent to the Thinkific endpoint until the destination is activated. Destinations can be activated immediately or at a later time, providing full control over data movement.
