Prerequisites

Before creating a Paymo credential, you need to obtain your API key from your Paymo account. Paymo uses API key authentication for all API requests, with the API key sent in the Authorization header.

To obtain your Paymo API key, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to your Paymo account using your administrator credentials.

  2. Navigate to your account settings or profile settings in the Paymo interface.

  3. Look for the API or API Keys section in your account settings.

  4. If you don't have an API key yet, look for the option to generate or view your API key.

  5. Click Generate API Key or Create API Key to create a new API key.

  6. Configure your API key settings:

    • Enter a name for the API key (e.g., "Nexla Integration")
    • Review and select the permissions or scopes for the key (if applicable)
  7. Click Generate or Create to create the API key.

  8. Copy the API key immediately after it's generated, as it may not be accessible again after you navigate away from the page.

  9. Store the API key securely, as you will need it to configure your Nexla credential. The API key is sensitive information and should be kept confidential.

The API key is sent in the Authorization header for all API requests to the Paymo API. The API key authenticates your requests and grants access to Paymo resources based on your account permissions and the key's scopes. If your API key is compromised, you should immediately revoke it in your Paymo account settings and generate a new one. For detailed information about obtaining API keys, API authentication, and available endpoints, refer to the Paymo API documentation.

  2. Enter your Paymo API key in the API Key Value field. This is the API key you obtained from your Paymo account settings (API or API Keys section). The API key is sent in the Authorization: {api_key} header for all API requests to the Paymo API. The API key is sensitive information and must be kept confidential.

Your Paymo API key can be found in your Paymo account settings under the API or API Keys section. The API key is sent in the Authorization: {api_key} header for all API requests to the Paymo API.

If your API key is compromised, you should immediately revoke it in your Paymo account settings and generate a new one. The API key provides access to your Paymo account data and should be treated as sensitive information. Keep your API key secure and do not share it publicly.

For detailed information about obtaining API keys, API authentication, and available endpoints, see the Paymo API documentation.

  3. Click the Save button at the bottom of the overlay. The newly added credential will now appear in a tile on the Authenticate screen during data source/destination creation.

Use as a data source

To create a new data flow, navigate to the Integrate section, and click the New Data Flow button. Select the Paymo connector tile, then select the credential that will be used to connect to your Paymo account, and click Next; or, create a new Paymo credential for use in this flow.

Endpoint templates

Nexla provides pre-built templates that can be used to rapidly configure data sources to ingest data from common Paymo endpoints. Select the endpoint from which this source will fetch data from the Endpoint pulldown menu. Available endpoint templates are listed in the expandable boxes below.

Get Clients

This endpoint template lists all clients from your Paymo account. Use this template when you need to retrieve information about clients, including client IDs, names, and other client data.

  • This endpoint automatically retrieves all clients from your Paymo account. No additional configuration is required beyond selecting this endpoint template.

This endpoint lists all clients from your Paymo account, including client IDs, names, and other client metadata. Use this endpoint to discover which clients are available in your Paymo account before using them with other Paymo endpoints.

For detailed information about client management, API response structures, and available client data, see the Paymo API documentation.

Get Files

This endpoint template lists files for a specific project from your Paymo account. Use this template when you need to retrieve information about files associated with a project, including file IDs, names, and other file data.

  • Enter the project ID in the Project Id field. This should be the unique identifier of the project whose files you wish to fetch. The project ID determines which project's files will be retrieved. You can find the project ID in your Paymo account or by using other Paymo endpoints.

This endpoint lists files for a specific project from your Paymo account, including file IDs, names, and other file metadata. The endpoint filters files by project ID to return only files associated with the specified project.

For detailed information about file management, API response structures, and available file data, see the Paymo API documentation.

Once the selected endpoint template has been configured, click the Test button to the right of the endpoint selection menu to retrieve a sample of the data that will be fetched. Sample data will be displayed in the Endpoint Test Result panel on the right, allowing you to verify that the source is configured correctly before saving.

Manual configuration

Paymo data sources can also be manually configured to ingest data from any valid Paymo API endpoint, including endpoints not covered by the pre-built templates, chained API calls, or custom request parameters. Select the Advanced tab at the top of the configuration screen, and follow the instructions in Connect to Any API to configure the API method, endpoint URL, date/time and lookup macros, path to data, metadata, and request headers.

Paymo API typically uses the GET method for retrieving data from endpoints, for example https://app.paymoapp.com/api/clients or https://app.paymoapp.com/api/files?where=project_id={project_id}. Set the Response Data Path to a JSONPath matching the response structure, such as $.clients[*] or $.files[*], depending on the endpoint.

Once all of the relevant settings have been configured, click the Create button in the upper right corner of the screen to save and create the new Paymo data source. Nexla will now begin ingesting data from the configured endpoint and will organize any data that it finds into one or more Nexsets.

Use as a destination

Click the + icon on the Nexset that will be sent to the Paymo destination, and select the Send to Destination option from the menu. Select the Paymo connector from the list of available destination connectors, then select the credential that will be used to connect to your Paymo account, and click Next; or, create a new Paymo credential for use in this flow.

Endpoint templates

Nexla provides pre-built templates that can be used to rapidly configure destinations to send data to common Paymo endpoints. Select the endpoint to which data will be sent from the Endpoint pulldown menu. Then, click on the template in the list below to expand it, and follow the instructions to configure additional endpoint settings.

Create Client

This endpoint template creates a client in your Paymo account using records from a Nexset. Use this template when you need to create new clients in Paymo for project management, invoicing, or other client management purposes.

  • This endpoint automatically creates clients from your data. No additional configuration is required beyond selecting this endpoint template. The request body should contain the client data in JSON format matching the Paymo API structure.
