Marketstack

Marketstack is a REST API from APILayer that provides real-time, intraday, and historical stock market data. It offers access to exchange information, ticker quotes, end-of-day prices, stock splits, dividends, currencies, and timezones across global exchanges. Nexla connects to Marketstack as a data source using an API access key, letting you ingest market data on a schedule for analytics, reporting, and downstream pipelines.

Prerequisites

Before creating a Marketstack credential, you need a Marketstack API access key. Marketstack authenticates every request with an access key that is passed as the access_key query parameter.

To obtain your API access key, follow these steps:

  1. Sign up for an account at marketstack.com. Marketstack offers a free plan (250 requests per month) suitable for testing and development, along with paid plans for higher volumes and additional features such as intraday and real-time data.

  2. Sign in to your account and open your Dashboard.

  3. Locate your unique API Access Key on the dashboard. It is a long alphanumeric string displayed prominently on the account page.

  4. Copy the access key and store it securely. You will enter it when creating your Nexla credential.

Treat the access key like a password, as it authorizes usage against your account and request quota. If your key is ever compromised, you can reset it from your Marketstack account dashboard. For details on endpoints, parameters, and plan limits, see the Marketstack API documentation.

Authenticate

Credentials required

Authenticate using your Marketstack API key passed as a query parameter or header.

FieldRequiredSecretDescription
API Key ValueYesYesAn encoded string value used as a secret token to authenticate API requests
Base URLYesNoThe base URL for the Marketstack API.

Create a credential in Nexla

  1. After selecting the data source type, click the Add Credential tile to open the Add New Credential overlay.

  2. Enter a name for the credential in the Credential Name field and a short, meaningful description in the Credential Description field.

  3. Enter your Marketstack API access key in the API Key Value field. This is the access key you obtained in Prerequisites, and it is sent as the access_key query parameter on every request. This value is secret and should be kept confidential.

  4. Enter the API base URL in the Base URL field. The default is https://api.marketstack.com/v1.

If your API access key is compromised, reset it from your Marketstack account dashboard and update this credential with the new value.

For detailed information about authentication, endpoints, and plan limits, see the Marketstack API documentation.

  5. Click the Save button at the bottom of the overlay. The newly added credential will now appear in a tile on the Authenticate screen during data source creation.

Use as a data source

To create a new data flow, navigate to the Integrate section, and click the New Data Flow button. Select the Marketstack connector tile, then select the credential that will be used to connect to Marketstack, and click Next; or, create a new Marketstack credential for use in this flow.

Once the selected endpoint template has been configured, click the Test button to the right of the endpoint selection menu to retrieve a sample of the data that will be fetched. Sample data will be displayed in the Endpoint Test Result panel on the right, allowing you to verify that the source is configured correctly before saving.

Manual configuration

Marketstack data sources can also be manually configured to ingest data from any valid Marketstack API endpoint, including endpoints not covered by the pre-built templates, chained API calls, or custom request parameters. Select the Advanced tab at the top of the configuration screen, and follow the instructions in Connect to Any API to configure the API method, endpoint URL, date/time and lookup macros, path to data, metadata, and request headers.

Once all of the relevant settings have been configured, click the Create button in the upper right corner of the screen to save and create the new Marketstack data source. Nexla will now begin ingesting data from the configured endpoint and will organize any data that it finds into one or more Nexsets.
