Weatherstack

Weatherstack is a real-time weather data API that provides current conditions, forecasts, historical weather, and marine data with global coverage. It exposes a REST API where requests are authenticated with an access key and return structured JSON weather data for a specified location. Nexla connects to Weatherstack as a data source to ingest weather data on a schedule for downstream analytics and integration.

Prerequisites

Before creating a Weatherstack credential, you need a Weatherstack account and an API access key. Weatherstack authenticates every request with an access key that is passed as the access_key query parameter.

To obtain your Weatherstack access key, follow these steps:

  1. Sign up for an account at weatherstack.com. A free tier is available, with paid plans that unlock additional endpoints (such as forecasts, historical data, and marine weather) and higher request volumes.

  2. Sign in to your account and open your Weatherstack dashboard.

  3. Copy the API access key shown on the dashboard. This is the value you will provide to Nexla to authenticate requests.

  4. Note the base URL for the API. Weatherstack serves requests from https://api.weatherstack.com/, and each endpoint (for example, current, forecast, or historical) is appended to this base URL.

Keep your access key confidential. If it is compromised, regenerate it from your Weatherstack account. For details about available endpoints, request parameters, and response formats, see the Weatherstack API documentation.

Create a credential in Nexla

  1. After selecting the data source type, click the Add Credential tile to open the Add New Credential overlay.

  2. Enter a name for the credential in the Credential Name field and a short, meaningful description in the Credential Description field.

  3. Enter your Weatherstack API access key in the Access Key field. This value is passed as the access_key query parameter to authenticate every request.

  4. Enter the API access key value in the API Key Value field. This is the secret token used to authenticate your API requests.

  5. Enter the API base URL in the Base URL field. Weatherstack requests are served from https://api.weatherstack.com/.

  6. Click the Save button at the bottom of the overlay. The newly added credential will now appear in a tile on the Authenticate screen during data source creation.

Use as a data source

To create a new data flow, navigate to the Integrate section, and click the New Data Flow button. Select the Weatherstack connector tile, then select the credential that will be used to connect to Weatherstack, and click Next; or, create a new Weatherstack credential for use in this flow.

Endpoint templates

Nexla provides pre-built templates that can be used to rapidly configure data sources to ingest data from common Weatherstack endpoints. Select the endpoint from which this source will fetch data from the Endpoint pulldown menu. Available endpoint templates are listed in the expandable boxes below.

[Rest API] Get Current Weather

Returns current weather conditions for a specified location.

  • Use this template to fetch real-time weather data such as temperature, wind, humidity, and conditions for a location you specify.

[Rest API] Get Weather Forecast

Returns weather forecast data for a specified location.

  • Use this template to fetch forecast data for an upcoming period for the location you specify. Forecast access depends on your Weatherstack subscription plan.

Returns historical weather data for a specified location and date range.

  • Use this template to fetch past weather data for a location over a date range you specify. Historical access depends on your Weatherstack subscription plan.

Returns a list of locations matching the search query for autocomplete suggestions.

  • Use this template to look up locations that match a search query, which is useful for resolving place names before requesting weather data.

[Rest API] Get Marine Weather

Returns current marine and sailing weather data for a given latitude and longitude, including wave height, swell, wind, and tide information.

  • Use this template to fetch marine and sailing conditions for a specific latitude/longitude. Marine access depends on your Weatherstack subscription plan.

[Rest API] Get Historical Marine Weather

Returns historical marine weather data for a given latitude/longitude and date range, including tide, wave, swell, and wind data going back to January 2015.

  • Use this template to fetch past marine conditions for a specific latitude/longitude over a date range you specify. Historical marine access depends on your Weatherstack subscription plan.

Once the selected endpoint template has been configured, click the Test button to the right of the endpoint selection menu to retrieve a sample of the data that will be fetched. Sample data will be displayed in the Endpoint Test Result panel on the right, allowing you to verify that the source is configured correctly before saving.

Manual configuration

Weatherstack data sources can also be manually configured to ingest data from any valid Weatherstack API endpoint, including endpoints not covered by the pre-built templates, chained API calls, or custom request parameters. Select the Advanced tab at the top of the configuration screen, and follow the instructions in Connect to Any API to configure the API method, endpoint URL, date/time and lookup macros, path to data, metadata, and request headers.

Once all of the relevant settings have been configured, click the Create button in the upper right corner of the screen to save and create the new Weatherstack data source. Nexla will now begin ingesting data from the configured endpoint and will organize any data that it finds into one or more Nexsets.
