Wolfram Alpha
Wolfram Alpha is a computational knowledge engine developed by Wolfram Research that answers factual queries by computing solutions using curated data, algorithms, and AI across numerous domains including mathematics, science, technology, and more.
Power end-to-end data operations for your Wolfram Alpha API with Nexla. Our bi-directional Wolfram Alpha connector is purpose-built for Wolfram Alpha, making it simple to ingest data, sync it across systems, and deliver it anywhere — all with no coding required. Nexla turns API-sourced data into ready-to-use, reusable data products and makes it easy to send data to Wolfram Alpha or any other destination. With comprehensive monitoring, lineage tracking, and access controls, Nexla keeps your Wolfram Alpha workflows fast, secure, and fully governed.

Prerequisites
Before creating a Wolfram Alpha credential, you need to obtain your App ID (API Key) from your Wolfram Alpha Developer account. Wolfram Alpha uses API key authentication for all API requests, with the key sent as a URL parameter.
To obtain your Wolfram Alpha API credentials, follow these steps:
-
Sign in to your Wolfram Alpha account using your administrator credentials, or create a new account at Wolfram Alpha.
-
Navigate to the Wolfram Alpha Developer Portal or visit the Wolfram Alpha API documentation to access API key management.
-
In the Wolfram Alpha Developer Portal or API settings, navigate to API Keys, My Apps, or Developer Settings to access your API key management.
-
If you don't have an API key yet, click Create App or Generate API Key to create a new API key.
-
Configure your API key settings:
- Enter a name for the API key (e.g., "Nexla Integration")
- Review the API key permissions or usage limits (if applicable)
- Click Create or Generate to create the API key
-
After the API key is created, copy the App ID (API Key) value immediately, as it may not be accessible again after you navigate away from the page.
-
Store the API key securely, as you will need it to configure your Nexla credential. The API key is sensitive information and should be kept confidential.
The App ID (API Key) is sent as a URL parameter (appid) for all API requests to the Wolfram Alpha API. The key authenticates your requests and grants access to Wolfram Alpha resources based on your account permissions. If your API key is compromised, you should immediately revoke it in your Wolfram Alpha Developer Portal and generate a new one. For detailed information about obtaining API keys, API authentication, and available endpoints, refer to the Wolfram Alpha API documentation.

Create a credential in Nexla
- After selecting the data source/destination type, click the Add Credential tile to open the Add New Credential overlay.
New Credential Overlay – Wolfram Alpha

-
Enter a name for the credential in the Credential Name field and a short, meaningful description in the Credential Description field.
-
Enter your API Key Value in the API Key Value field. This is your Wolfram Alpha App ID (API Key) that you obtained in Prerequisites. The API Key is sent as a URL parameter (
appid) for all API requests to the Wolfram Alpha API and must be kept confidential.Your Wolfram Alpha API credentials (App ID/API Key) can be found in the Wolfram Alpha Developer Portal or your Wolfram Alpha Developer Portal under API Keys or My Apps. The API key is sent as a URL parameter (
appid) for all API requests to the Wolfram Alpha API.If your API key is compromised, you should immediately revoke it in your Wolfram Alpha Developer Portal and generate a new one. The API key provides access to your Wolfram Alpha account data and should be treated as sensitive information. Keep your API key secure and do not share it publicly.
For detailed information about obtaining API keys, API authentication, and available endpoints, see the Wolfram Alpha API documentation.
-
Click the Save button at the bottom of the overlay. The newly added credential will now appear in a tile on the Authenticate screen during data source/destination creation.
Use as a data source
To create a new data flow, navigate to the Integrate section, and click the New Data Flow button. Select the Wolfram Alpha connector tile, then select the credential that will be used to connect to the Wolfram Alpha instance, and click Next; or, create a new Wolfram Alpha credential for use in this flow.
Endpoint templates
Nexla provides pre-built templates that can be used to rapidly configure data sources to ingest data from common Wolfram Alpha endpoints. Select the endpoint from which this source will fetch data from the Endpoint pulldown menu. Available endpoint templates are listed in the expandable boxes below.
Once the selected endpoint template has been configured, click the Test button to the right of the endpoint selection menu to retrieve a sample of the data that will be fetched. Sample data will be displayed in the Endpoint Test Result panel on the right, allowing you to verify that the source is configured correctly before saving.
Manual configuration
Wolfram Alpha data sources can also be manually configured to ingest data from any valid Wolfram Alpha API endpoint, including endpoints not covered by the pre-built template, chained API calls, or custom request parameters. Select the Advanced tab at the top of the configuration screen, and follow the instructions in Connect to Any API to configure the API method, endpoint URL, date/time and lookup macros, path to data, metadata, and request headers.
Wolfram Alpha API endpoints typically follow the pattern http://api.wolframalpha.com/v1/{endpoint_path}?appid={api_key}, where {endpoint_path} is the endpoint path and {api_key} is your App ID. The appid URL parameter is populated automatically from your credential configuration. When the response is in JSON format with a root object containing the relevant data, the path to data can typically be set to $.
Once all of the relevant settings have been configured, click the Create button in the upper right corner of the screen to save and create the new Wolfram Alpha data source. Nexla will now begin ingesting data from the configured endpoint and will organize any data that it finds into one or more Nexsets.
