K6 Cloud

K6 Cloud (now part of Grafana Cloud k6) is a load testing platform for performance and scalability testing. Its Cloud REST API lets you manage organizations, projects, and load tests, trigger and abort test runs, and retrieve performance metrics for completed or running tests. Nexla connects to the K6 Cloud API to ingest test, run, and metrics data as a source and to create and control tests as a destination.

Prerequisites

Before creating a K6 Cloud credential, you need a K6 Cloud (Grafana Cloud k6) API token and the numeric ID of the Grafana stack you want to work with. The Cloud REST API authenticates each request with the token sent as a Bearer token in the Authorization header, and it requires the stack ID sent in the X-Stack-Id header to identify the request scope.

To obtain these values:

  1. Sign in to your Grafana Cloud account and open the stack you want to use.

  2. Navigate to Testing & synthetics > Performance > Settings.

  3. Under Access, generate an API token by clicking Personal token (scoped to your user) or Stack token (scoped to the stack). Copy the token immediately, as it may not be shown again.

  4. On the same Settings page, note the Stack ID value. This is the numeric identifier of your Grafana stack and is sent in the X-Stack-Id header for every API request.

  5. Store both the token and the stack ID securely, as you will need them to configure your Nexla credential. The API token is sensitive and should be kept confidential.

Authenticate

Create a credential in Nexla

  1. After selecting the data source/destination type, click the Add Credential tile to open the Add New Credential overlay.

  2. Enter a name for the credential in the Credential Name field and a short, meaningful description in the Credential Description field.

  3. Enter your K6 Cloud API token in the API Token field. This token is sent as a Bearer token in the Authorization header for all API requests and must be kept confidential.

  4. Enter the API base URL in the Base URL field. The default is https://api.k6.io.

  5. Enter the numeric ID of your Grafana stack in the Grafana Stack ID field. This value is sent in the X-Stack-Id header to scope every request.

  6. Click the Save button at the bottom of the overlay. The newly added credential will now appear in a tile on the Authenticate screen during data source/destination creation.

    If your API token is compromised, revoke it in your Grafana Cloud stack settings and generate a new one. For detailed information about authentication and available endpoints, see the K6 Cloud REST API documentation.

Use as a data source

To create a new data flow, navigate to the Integrate section, and click the New Data Flow button. Select the K6 Cloud connector tile, then select the credential that will be used to connect to K6 Cloud, and click Next; or, create a new K6 Cloud credential for use in this flow.

Endpoint templates

Nexla provides pre-built templates that can be used to rapidly configure data sources to ingest data from common K6 Cloud endpoints. Select the endpoint from which this source will fetch data from the Endpoint pulldown menu. Available endpoint templates are listed in the expandable boxes below.

[Rest API] List Organizations

Returns a list of all organizations accessible to the authenticated user.

[Rest API] List Projects

Returns a list of projects for the specified organization.

  • Provide the Organization ID of the organization for which to list projects.

[Rest API] List Load Tests

Returns a list of load tests available in the K6 Cloud account.

[Rest API] Get Test Run Metrics

Fetch performance metrics (response times, throughput, error rates) for a completed or running test run.

  • Provide the test run Id whose metrics you want to retrieve.

Retrieve a single test configuration by ID from the k6 cloud platform.

  • Provide the Id of the test to retrieve.

Once the selected endpoint template has been configured, click the Test button to the right of the endpoint selection menu to retrieve a sample of the data that will be fetched. Sample data will be displayed in the Endpoint Test Result panel on the right, allowing you to verify that the source is configured correctly before saving.

Manual configuration

K6 Cloud data sources can also be manually configured to ingest data from any valid K6 Cloud API endpoint, including endpoints not covered by the pre-built templates, chained API calls, or custom request parameters. Select the Advanced tab at the top of the configuration screen, and follow the instructions in Connect to Any API to configure the API method, endpoint URL, date/time and lookup macros, path to data, metadata, and request headers.

Once all of the relevant settings have been configured, click the Create button in the upper right corner of the screen to save and create the new K6 Cloud data source. Nexla will now begin ingesting data from the configured endpoint and will organize any data that it finds into one or more Nexsets.

Use as a destination

Click the + icon on the Nexset that will be sent to the K6 Cloud destination, and select the Send to Destination option from the menu. Select the K6 Cloud connector from the list of available destination connectors, then select the credential that will be used to connect to K6 Cloud, and click Next; or, create a new K6 Cloud credential for use in this flow.

Endpoint templates

Nexla provides pre-built templates that can be used to rapidly configure destinations to send data to common K6 Cloud endpoints. Select the endpoint to which data will be sent from the Endpoint pulldown menu. Then, click on the template in the list below to expand it, and follow the instructions to configure additional endpoint settings.

Create a new load test configuration.

  • Each record from your Nexset is sent as JSON in the request body to create a new load test configuration.

Start (trigger) a test run for a given test.

  • Provide the test Id to start. Each record from your Nexset is sent as JSON in the request body.

Update an existing test configuration (e.g. VUs, duration, script) in k6 Cloud load testing platform.

  • Provide the Id of the test to update. Each record from your Nexset is sent as JSON in the request body.

Abort a running test run. This endpoint stops an active test execution immediately without waiting for graceful shutdown.

  • Provide the Id of the test run to stop.

Delete a test configuration by its unique identifier to remove it from the system.

  • Provide the Id of the test configuration to delete.

Create a new project within an organization.

  • Provide the Organization Id in which to create the project. Each record from your Nexset is sent as JSON in the request body.

Manual configuration

K6 Cloud destinations can also be manually configured to send data to any valid K6 Cloud API endpoint. Select the Advanced tab at the top of the configuration screen, and follow the instructions in Connect to Any API to configure the API method, data format, endpoint URL, request headers, attribute exclusions, record batching, and response webhooks.

Save & activate

Once all endpoint settings have been configured, click the Done button in the upper right corner of the screen to save and create the destination. To send the data to the configured K6 Cloud endpoint, open the destination resource menu, and select Activate.

The Nexset data will not be sent to the K6 Cloud endpoint until the destination is activated. Destinations can be activated immediately or at a later time, providing full control over data movement.
